Atrosalarias fuscus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Highfin Blenny (Atrosalarias fuscus) is one of the most effective algae-grazing blennies in the marine hobby, though its dark, nearly black coloration makes it less immediately spectacular than more colorful species. What it lacks in bright color it more than compensates for in function: it is among the most dedicated and prolific algae grazers available, constantly patrolling rock surfaces and grazing on film algae, diatoms, microalgae, and even some hair algae with its distinctive comb-like teeth. Its notably tall dorsal fin is attractive in profile and gives it a slightly prehistoric appearance. A genuinely useful member of the reef clean-up crew that controls algae growth in a natural, sustainable way.
Provide at least 100 liters with abundant live rock and natural algae growth for constant grazing. Supplement with dried seaweed/nori sheets and spirulina-enriched foods as primary algae growth may be inadequate to sustain the fish alone. Can be semi-aggressive toward other blennies or similar-shaped fish; house carefully if combining with other blenny species. Generally peaceful with dissimilar fish. Reef-safe with corals and most invertebrates. A secure lid is advisable.
