Cyprinus rubrofuscus (domesticated koi)
Origin: Japan (captive bred)
Medium-grade Higoi display their full deep red-orange colouration with a healthy metallic sheen and well-proportioned body typical of quality Japanese-bred single-colour koi. Higoi, meaning 'scarlet koi', are prized in Japan and increasingly in Belgium and the Netherlands for the meditative simplicity and bold visual presence that a single, deep colour brings to a garden pond. These fish are centrepiece-quality additions offering bold colour without the complexity of a patterned variety.
House in a well-filtered pond of at least 2,000 L with good water quality. Maintain pH 7.0–8.5, temperature 4–25°C; fully cold-hardy through Northern European winters. Feed quality koi pellets or sticks with colour-enhancing ingredients to maintain and deepen the red colouration. UV sterilization and regular water changes maintain the water clarity needed to fully appreciate the red body colour. Compatible with all koi varieties.
