Cyprinus rubrofuscus (domesticated koi)
Origin: Japan (captive bred)
Higoi, or red koi, are single-coloured deep red-orange koi prized for their bold, uniform colouration and the meditative simplicity they bring to Japanese-style garden ponds. Small specimens are affordable, healthy starter fish that develop progressively deeper and more saturated colour as they mature over their first few seasons. Equally popular in Belgian and Dutch formal and naturalistic pond gardens as a striking single-colour complement to patterned koi varieties.
Start in a pond of at least 1,000 L with good filtration. Maintain pH 7.0–8.5, temperature 4–25°C; fully cold-hardy through Belgian winters. Feed quality koi pellets or sticks with colour-enhancing pigments to encourage deep red development. Avoid overstocking at this early growth stage. Compatible with all koi varieties and standard pond fish.
