Oryzias latipes
Also known as: Himedaka, Orange Medaka, Japanese Orange Ricefish
Origin: Japan (cultivated variety)
The Himedaka (literally 'princess medaka') is one of the oldest cultivated medaka varieties, with records of orange-coloured medaka kept as ornamental fish in Japan dating back to the early Edo period. Its warm orange body is a result of selective breeding for xanthophore pigment intensity. It is identical in care to wild-type O. latipes and equally robust.
Water: 10–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.5; tolerates a wide range of conditions including mild brackish. Tank: 20 L minimum; warm, well-lit tank or outdoor tub; floating or fine-leaved plants for spawning. Feeding: Omnivorous; medaka pellets, flake, Daphnia, and frozen micro foods. Behaviour: Peaceful, social surface fish; females drape egg clusters before attaching them to plants. Compatibility: All medaka varieties can be kept together; compatible with small nano fish and shrimp.
