Hippocampus reidi
Origin: Western Atlantic (captive-bred)
Hippocampus reidi, the Longsnout or Brazilian Seahorse, is among the most popular seahorse species for marine aquarists. Captive-bred specimens from specialist breeders are trained to accept frozen mysis shrimp, dramatically improving survival compared to wild-caught fish. Males brood the young in a specialised pouch. Pairs form lasting bonds and should be kept together. Requires a dedicated seahorse tank — no strong flow, no fin-nipping fish, and a seahorse-specific diet fed multiple times daily.
Dedicated seahorse tank, no flow above 0.5 turnover/hr. Hitching posts (live corals, gorgonians, algae) essential. Feed enriched frozen mysis 3× daily minimum. Standard reef parameters but temperature 20–24 °C preferred. No aggressive feeders. Captive-bred only strongly recommended.
