Apistogramma hippolytae
Also known as: Hippolyta Apisto, Hippolytae Apistogramma
Origin: South America
Apistogramma hippolytae is native to the lower Rio Negro drainage and is appreciated for its striking black-and-yellow body pattern. While it still requires soft, acidic water typical of Rio Negro species, it is considered reasonably robust and is a good choice for those stepping up from beginner Apistogramma. Males display full colour under optimal conditions.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 5.0-6.8, soft (GH 1-6); tannins and low conductivity beneficial. Tank: 60L minimum, dark substrate, leaf litter, caves, moderate planting. Feeding: omnivore — live/frozen microfoods; quality cichlid pellets and flake. Behaviour: territorial during breeding; harem setup (1M:2-3F) recommended. Compatibility: peaceful community with small Rio Negro tetras and Corydoras.
