Apistogramma hippolytae
Origin: Brazil (Rio Negro and tributaries)
Apistogramma hippolytae is a rarely exported dwarf cichlid from the Rio Negro and its tributaries in Brazil, prized for the male's striking elongated dorsal filaments and subtle blue-green iridescent flank shimmer that is best appreciated in a well-lit blackwater aquarium. It demands soft, very acidic blackwater conditions and does best in a species-only biotope setup with minimal water movement, leaf litter, and subdued lighting that mimics its natural Rio Negro habitat. An exciting and challenging find for serious Apistogramma enthusiasts.
Set up a dedicated blackwater biotope with RO or very soft water (pH 4.0–6.0, GH 0–5, KH 0–2) at 26–30°C. Add driftwood, Indian almond leaves, and leaf litter; use peat filtration or alder cones to maintain the tannin-rich environment. Keep as a pair or harem with 1 male and 2–3 females. Feed small live or frozen prey: Artemia nauplii, micro worms, Daphnia, and micro pellets. Avoid all direct sunlight and strong flow.
