Thayeria boehlkei
Also known as: Hockey Stick Tetra, Penguin Tetra, Boehlke's Penguin Tetra
Origin: Peru, upper Amazon basin
Thayeria boehlkei, commonly called the Hockey Stick or Penguin Tetra, is native to Peru and the upper Amazon basin. It is uniquely recognizable by its black horizontal stripe that turns sharply downward into the lower caudal lobe, creating the eponymous hockey stick shape, and by its characteristic head-up, tilted swimming posture that is unusual among tetras. Groups of this species create a highly animated mid-water display. It is peaceful, hardy, and adaptable, tolerating a range of conditions. It can be housed with most community fish and is active without being aggressive. A long-established and consistently popular aquarium fish.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–28 °C; soft to moderately hard. Very adaptable. Tank: 70 L minimum; open swimming lanes important for this active species. Plants along borders. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts all standard aquarium foods; include protein-rich frozen foods for best condition. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; moderate ease. Soft slightly acidic water. Condition with live foods. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent community fish. Avoid aggressive or nippy tankmates.
