Apistogramma hoignei
Also known as: Hoigne's Apisto, Hoignei Apistogramma
Origin: South America
Apistogramma hoignei originates from the Venezuelan Orinoco drainage where it inhabits slow-moving, acidic waterways with leaf litter and low conductivity. Males develop a distinctive high-contrast body pattern with vivid fin coloration during breeding season. Soft, acidic water is essential for long-term health and colour expression.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 5.0-6.8, soft (GH 1-6); tannins and low conductivity ideal. Tank: 60L minimum, sand substrate, dense leaf litter, caves, and planting. Feeding: omnivore — live/frozen Cyclops, Artemia, bloodworm; micro-pellets. Behaviour: territorial during breeding; harem setup (1M:2-3F) recommended. Compatibility: peaceful community with small Orinoco tetras and Corydoras.
