Baryancistrus sp. L014b
Also known as: Honeycomb Pleco, L014b, Sunshine Honeycomb Pleco
Origin: Rio Tocantins, Brazil
Baryancistrus sp. L014b, the Honeycomb Pleco, is a highly ornamental variant within the Sunshine Pleco complex from the Rio Tocantins. Rather than the spot pattern of the classic L014, this form displays an intricate reticulated network of gold-orange lines on a black ground colour, creating a honeycomb or net-like pattern across the entire body. The effect is particularly dramatic under strong lighting. Fin margins remain vivid orange-yellow.
Care requirements are identical to L014: warm water (26–30°C), strong flow, excellent oxygenation, minimum 200 L, and smooth rocks with driftwood. It is a demanding species in terms of flow and oxygenation requirements but is otherwise moderately manageable. Diet should include high-quality sinking wafers, Repashy, and occasional meaty foods.
The Honeycomb Pleco is somewhat rarer in the trade than the standard L014 spot form, reflecting more restricted wild collection from its specific Tocantins locality. It commands a premium price. Like other Baryancistrus, it is semi-aggressive toward similarly coloured or patterned plecos and should be the only large Baryancistrus in the aquarium.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft and highly oxygenated; very strong flow and turbulence essential. Tank: Minimum 200 L; smooth boulders, slate caves, driftwood; no delicate plants. Feeding: Biofilm grazer; algae wafers, Repashy, blanched vegetables, occasional invertebrate supplements. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs; requires stable high temperature and pristine water. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive toward similarly coloured Baryancistrus; peaceful with unrelated fish.
