Pseudogastromyzon cheni is one of the more adaptable hillstream loaches, native to the rocky rivers of the Pearl River catchment including streams around Hong Kong. It displays a pale tan body with irregular brownish spotting and is somewhat hardier than many hillstream relatives when it comes to slightly warmer conditions. A useful algae grazer and engaging display fish in current-rich aquaria.
Water: 18-24°C, pH 7.0-7.8, hard and well-oxygenated with strong flow. Tank: Minimum 60 L, large smooth boulders, powerhead or wavemaker. Feeding: Grazes biofilm and diatoms; supplement algae wafers and blanched spinach. Behaviour: Active by day on rock surfaces; males defend feeding territories. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with small schooling fish and other hillstream species.
