Hoplarchus psittacus
Also known as: Parrot Cichlid, Hoplarchus, True Parrot Cichlid
Origin: Wild caught – Rio Negro / Orinoco, South America
Hoplarchus psittacus, the parrot cichlid, is a large and rarely encountered Amazonian cichlid from the Rio Negro and Orinoco blackwater systems. Its common name references the powerful, beak-like oral structure that gives the fish a distinctive curved snout profile, an adaptation for feeding on hard seeds and fruit in its native habitat.
Adult specimens develop striking blue-green iridescent scaling over a yellow-olive base body, and males display vibrant colouration during breeding condition. This is not to be confused with the commercially produced blood parrot cichlid hybrid — Hoplarchus psittacus is a valid species and a genuinely remarkable fish.
This species demands the most exacting blackwater conditions in the aquarium, requires very large dedicated housing, and is considered an advanced species for specialist collectors. Wild-caught specimens need careful quarantine and often require live or frozen foods initially before accepting prepared diets.
Water: Temperature 26–30°C, pH 4.5–6.0, GH 0–4, KH 0–2; pure blackwater conditions with RO water and heavy tannin supplementation. Tank: 500 L minimum for a pair; dim lighting, driftwood, leaf litter; powerful yet gentle filtration. Feeding: Wild specimens initially require live foods; transition to frozen bloodworm, prawns, and quality cichlid sticks; supplement with fruit and nuts. Breeding: Rarely bred in captivity; requires exacting blackwater conditions and a well-conditioned pair. Compatibility: Keep only with large, robust blackwater species; best in a species-only setup.
