Pseudotropheus crabro
Also known as: Hornet Cichlid, Crabro Mbuna, Chameleon Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Pseudotropheus crabro is a fascinating mbuna found primarily around the lake's large catfish, Bagrus meridionalis, whose egg-eating behaviour it mimics using its pattern to approach and clean the catfish of parasites while also opportunistically consuming its eggs. In the aquarium it is a hardy, adaptable species with bold colouration that brightens with maturity.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, hard alkaline water. Tank: 200L minimum with typical mbuna rocky aquascape. Feeding: Omnivore; quality cichlid pellets, spirulina, occasional frozen invertebrates. Behaviour: Moderately aggressive; males chase females and rivals at spawning. Compatibility: Compatible with other mbuna of similar size and aggression level.
