Oryzias hubbsi
Also known as: Hubbs' Medaka, Hubbs' Ricefish
Origin: East Asia
Oryzias hubbsi is a lesser-known and infrequently traded medaka from East Asia, named in honour of the ichthyologist Carl Hubbs. It shares the fundamental hardiness characteristic of its genus, adapting to a range of temperatures and water conditions. Its subdued silver body colouration is unassuming compared to many ornamental medaka strains, but it holds appeal for hobbyists interested in the natural diversity of the Oryzias genus.
Water: 18–26 °C, pH 6.5–8.0, moderately hard preferred (GH 5–18). Tank: 20 L minimum; planted surface cover, calm water movement. Feeding: Omnivore — medaka flake, micro pellets, live or frozen Daphnia. Behaviour: Peaceful surface schooler; keep 6+ for natural group dynamics. Compatibility: Good with other medaka species, nano community fish, and dwarf shrimp.
