Pelvicachromis humilis
Also known as: Humilis Krib, Big Krib
Origin: West Africa (Guinea, Sierra Leone)
Pelvicachromis humilis is native to blackwater streams and rivers in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, where it inhabits densely vegetated, leaf-littered environments. It is larger than P. pulcher and requires more space, but rewards keepers with spectacular colouration, particularly in breeding condition. Soft, very acidic water is crucial for long-term success.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 5.5–6.8, soft water essential (GH 1–6). Tank: Minimum 100L; thick planting, driftwood, and caves with leaf litter substrate. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, frozen daphnia, cyclops, brine shrimp; occasional live bloodworm. Behaviour: Monogamous cave-brooders; both parents guard eggs and wriggling fry actively. Compatibility: Keep with small, unobtrusive dither fish; not suited to mixed cichlid tanks.
