Crenicichla hummelincki
Also known as: Hummelincki Pike Cichlid, Venezuelan Blue-flank Pike Cichlid
Origin: Lake Maracaibo basin and Orinoco tributaries, Venezuela
Crenicichla hummelincki is a moderately sized pike cichlid from the Lake Maracaibo basin and Orinoco tributaries of Venezuela, described by Hoedeman in 1945. It is a handsome species with a series of discrete dark lateral spots arranged in a longitudinal row against a pale silver body — the lower flanks displaying metallic blue-green iridescent scaling in well-maintained adults.
The species inhabits a range of river types in Venezuela, from clear mountain-fed streams to turbid lowland rivers, giving it useful adaptability to aquarium conditions. Soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water is ideal. A 200 L tank is the minimum for a pair, decorated with sand, driftwood, and rock caves providing clear territorial boundaries.
C. hummelincki is a reliable feeder that accepts frozen carnivore foods and quality pellets without difficulty. Breeding has been documented in captivity, making it a worthwhile project for aquarists with interest in Venezuelan Crenicichla. The species is occasionally available through specialist importers.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5 at 24–28°C; soft to moderately hard; regular water changes important. Tank: 200 L with sand, driftwood, and rock caves; moderate planting with robust species acceptable. Feeding: Frozen prawn, bloodworm, mussel, earthworm; good pellet acceptor. Breeding: Cave spawner; biparental care; condition with live/frozen foods. Compatibility: Compatible with large robust fish; a bonded species pair is ideal.
