Hypancistrus sp. L400
Also known as: Hypancistrus L400, L400
Origin: Amazon basin, Brazil
Hypancistrus sp. L400 is a relatively recently numbered and still undescribed species from Brazilian Amazonian waters. It presents a characteristic Hypancistrus appearance: a sleek, compact body covered in fine white to pale cream spots on a dark brown to black background, with the same cave-dwelling, carnivore-leaning biology shared across the genus. Its precise collection locality within the Amazon basin remains somewhat uncertain.
Care requirements closely mirror those of other small Hypancistrus species: warm water (26–30°C), moderate to strong flow, clean conditions, and a cave-rich aquarium. At approximately 10 cm it is suitable for aquariums of 80 L or more. Diet should lean toward meaty foods supplemented with algae-based items. Males are territorial near caves.
The L400 is a prized rarity due to its limited availability and collector cachet as a high-numbered, recently catalogued species. Breeding has been achieved in captivity among dedicated specialists following standard Hypancistrus methods. It is an excellent choice for hobbyists building a comprehensive L-number collection.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; moderate to strong flow with good oxygenation. Tank: Minimum 80 L; PVC or clay caves (one per male), smooth rocks, driftwood. Feeding: Omnivore; bloodworms, brine shrimp, high-protein pellets, algae wafers, Repashy. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs; standard Hypancistrus approach; moderately challenging. Compatibility: Peaceful with community fish; males territorial toward each other near caves.
