Hypancistrus zebra
Origin: Rio Xingu, Brazil (aquacultured)
Hypancistrus zebra, the Zebra Pleco (L046), is perhaps the most famous pleco in the aquarium hobby. Bold alternating black and white stripes, stocky build and manageable 8 cm size. Increasingly rare in the wild (Xingu dam threat) — all aquarium specimens are aquacultured. Commands a premium price.
Warm, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water. Temperature 28–32°C, pH 6.0–7.5. Fine sand with PVC tubes/caves for shelter. Carnivorous — feed meatier sinking foods than most plecos. Does not eat algae significantly.
