Hypselecara coryphaenoides
Also known as: Coryphaenoides Cichlid, Rio Negro Chocolate Cichlid
Origin: South America
Hypselecara coryphaenoides is found in the Rio Negro system of Brazil, where it occupies deep, tannin-stained blackwater channels. The species develops a notably tall and elongated body with a greenish-gold iridescence and large, luminous eyes adapted to low-light conditions. It is more demanding than its relative H. temporalis, requiring extremely soft, highly acidic water to remain healthy and display full colouration. A rarely seen species in the hobby, it is a true showpiece for the advanced aquarist maintaining a dedicated Rio Negro biotope.
Water: 25–30°C, pH 4.5–6.5, extremely soft (GH 0–6); RO or rain water recommended. Tank: Minimum 450L; darkened with driftwood, dried leaf litter, and minimal lighting. Feeding: Omnivore; high-quality cichlid pellets, live or frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and vegetable matter. Breeding: Rarely achieved in captivity; requires pristine soft-acid water and a naturally bonded pair. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable only with other soft-water species; avoid all hard-water tankmates.
