Hypselecara temporalis
Also known as: Chocolate Cichlid, Emerald Cichlid
Origin: South America
Hypselecara temporalis, the Chocolate Cichlid, is one of the more underappreciated large South American cichlids. Native to the Amazon and Orinoco drainages, it favours slow-moving, warm blackwater habitats. Juveniles display bold lateral banding and a prominent black dorsal blotch, while adults transition into rich chocolate-brown to reddish-chestnut tones. Despite its large size, this species is notably peaceful and even-tempered, making it an ideal companion in a large planted or driftwood aquarium. It does best in soft, warm, acidic water with excellent filtration.
Water: 24–29°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft (GH 2–10). Tank: Minimum 400L; large driftwood, subdued lighting, and robust plants such as Echinodorus or Anubias. Feeding: Omnivore; cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, prawn, and vegetable matter; supplement with algae wafers. Breeding: Flat-surface spawner; pairs are devoted parents; fry can be raised on BBS and micro-pellets. Compatibility: Peaceful with large tetras, catfish, and other peaceful cichlids; avoid very aggressive tankmates.
