Leuciscus idus
Origin: Europe (native)
The wild-type Silver Ide is the natural form of the orfe (Leuciscus idus), displaying a streamlined, torpedo-shaped silver-white body with pale grey fins and a distinctive bright yellow-orange iris. It is a fast, surface-oriented schooling fish native to rivers and larger standing waters across Northern and Central Europe. An elegant and naturalistic choice for a wildlife pond or mixed formal pond, it is fully cold-tolerant and thrives in well-oxygenated water alongside other native and non-native pond species.
Requires a pond of at least 1,000 L with excellent oxygenation. Silver Ide are extremely sensitive to low dissolved oxygen — strong surface agitation is essential, especially in warm weather. Keep in groups of at least 3–5. Feed quality floating pellets and they will naturally take surface insects. Compatible with koi, golden orfe, rudd, and other pond species. Fully cold-tolerant through Northern European winters.
