Crenicichla iguapina
Also known as: Iguapina Pike Cichlid, Iguape Pike Cichlid, Paraná Coastal Pike Cichlid
Origin: Iguape River and Atlantic coastal drainages, Paraná, Brazil
Crenicichla iguapina is a moderately slender pike cichlid endemic to the Iguape River system and adjacent Atlantic coastal drainages of Paraná state, southern Brazil. This Atlantic-slope endemic inhabits clear, well-oxygenated streams and small rivers over sandy and rocky substrates, often among submerged root tangles near the river bank.
In the aquarium, C. iguapina adapts well to a range of conditions — soft to moderately hard water, neutral to slightly acidic pH, and moderate temperatures appropriate for its southern latitude. The species does not require the strict blackwater conditions of Amazonian Crenicichla, making it more accessible to aquarists without specialist water preparation equipment.
At 18 cm, C. iguapina is a manageable predator for a 180 L species tank. Its attractive olive-gold body with fine dark lateral spotting makes it a visually appealing display fish. Breeding has been achieved in captivity and the species follows the standard cave-spawning Crenicichla protocol.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5 at 20–26°C; soft to moderately hard; neutral water acceptable. Tank: 180 L with sandy substrate, submerged roots, and driftwood. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods; quality cichlid pellets accepted readily. Breeding: Cave spawner; standard Crenicichla protocol; relatively straightforward. Compatibility: Atlantic coastal biotope; keep with robust fish of equivalent size.
