Inconspicuous Apistogramma

Apistogramma inconspicua is native to the Bolivian Amazon and is one of the more understated members of the genus in normal conditions — hence its name. However, during spawning the male undergoes a remarkable transformation, with previously faint lateral markings intensifying to bold black-and-yellow patterns and fins flushing with vivid color.

This species tolerates slightly harder and less acidic water than many Amazonian apistos due to its southern distribution, making it more accessible to hobbyists who cannot achieve true blackwater conditions. It is a cave-spawning species with typical Apistogramma brood care behavior.

A. inconspicua is an interesting choice for aquarists who enjoy observing behavioral changes during the breeding cycle and want a species that offers more variation in coloration than it initially reveals.

Water: Soft to moderate — pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 23–27°C; more tolerant than most apistos. Tank: 60 L with multiple caves and sight-breaking plant clusters. Feeding: Small invertebrates and micro-pellets; varied diet improves coloration. Breeding: Cave spawner; female guards well; relatively approachable for intermediate keepers. Compatibility: Small peaceful South American community fish.
