Acanthurus tristis
Origin: Indian Ocean
The Indian Ocean Mimic Tang (Acanthurus tristis) is a fascinating surgeonfish that exhibits remarkable protective mimicry as a juvenile — its coloration closely resembles the Halfblack Angelfish (Centropyge vrolikii), providing it protection during the vulnerable juvenile stage by association with the more aggressive angelfish. As it grows, it transitions to a more typical brownish adult tang coloration with subtle patterning. Native to the Indian Ocean, it is less commonly available than many other Acanthurus species. Once established it is moderately hardy and suitable for aquarists with experience keeping surgeonfish in suitably sized systems with strong water movement and a herbivore-focused diet.
Provide at least 350 liters with strong water flow and ample live rock. Feed daily with dried nori/seaweed sheets, frozen spirulina, and marine pellets as the primary diet, supplemented with frozen mysis. Can show territorial aggression toward other tangs; introduce carefully in multi-tang systems. Susceptible to ich under stress — maintain excellent water quality and a consistent varied diet. Reef-safe with corals.
