Flowerhorn hybrid (Cichlasomatinae)
Also known as: Indo Flowerhorn, Indonesian Flowerhorn
Origin: Captive bred (hybrid)
Indonesia has become a major hub for Flowerhorn breeding, producing large numbers of quality fish under the Indo Flowerhorn label. These fish are typically characterised by vivid red-orange body colouration, clear black lateral banding that forms distinct flower-like patterns, and well-developed koks that are proportionate to the body.
Indo Flowerhorns are generally priced more accessibly than premium Malaysian or Taiwanese bloodlines, making them the entry point for many aquarists into the Flowerhorn hobby. Despite their lower price, well-bred Indo specimens display excellent colouration and robust health thanks to the large-scale professional breeding operations that produce them.
The interactive personality that defines all Flowerhorns is fully present in the Indo variety. These fish quickly learn to recognise their owners and display active begging behaviour at feeding time, providing a level of interaction rare among aquarium fish.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0; standard Flowerhorn water requirements; weekly 30% water changes recommended. Tank: Minimum 350L; single specimen housing; powerful filtration essential. Feeding: Quality Flowerhorn pellets; supplement with frozen and live foods; colour-enhancing additives helpful. Breeding: Same as other Flowerhorn strains; widely bred commercially in Indonesia. Compatibility: Solitary; do not house with other fish.
