Pao cochinchinensis
Also known as: Indochinese Puffer, Cochinchinensis Puffer
Origin: Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand
Pao cochinchinensis is broadly distributed across the major river systems of Indochina and is one of the more commonly imported medium Pao species in the specialist trade. Its olive-green body is adorned with irregular yellow-brown spots and blotches. It is a powerful feeder capable of consuming large snails whole and requires correspondingly sturdy filtration to manage the resulting waste.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderately hard; high filtration capacity needed due to messy feeding habits. Tank: Minimum 120 L; robust decor — driftwood and rocks — as it may rearrange lightweight ornaments. Feeding: Large snails, cockles, clams, mussel on the half-shell, and earthworms. Behaviour: Bold, highly territorial, and aggressive toward any fish; may also attack handler's hands. Compatibility: Species-only; individual housing in a dedicated aquarium is mandatory.
