Etheostoma exile
Also known as: Iowa Darter
Origin: North America (Great Lakes region)
The Iowa Darter is found in a wide variety of habitats across the Great Lakes drainage and upper Mississippi basin, including weedy shallows and sandy-bottomed streams. Males develop attractive red-orange spots and blue-green markings during the spring breeding season.
Like all darters it rests on hard surfaces using its pectoral fins and makes quick bursts of movement to pursue prey or evade disturbance. A biotope tank with sand, gravel, smooth stones, and aquatic plants mimicking a Great Lakes tributary suits it perfectly.
The Iowa Darter is slightly more tolerant of still water than riffle-specialist darters, making it marginally more adaptable in the aquarium.
Water: 8–20°C, pH 7.0–8.2, GH 6–18; good oxygenation; moderate current preferred but not mandatory. Tank: minimum 60 L, sand and gravel substrate, smooth stones, sparse planting. Feeding: carnivore — live/frozen bloodworm, daphnia, cyclops, small brine shrimp. Breeding: spawns on or among gravel and plant roots in spring; male defends small territory. Compatibility: peaceful; can be kept with other small North American coolwater fish.
