Rocio octofasciata
Also known as: Jack Dempsey Cichlid, Jack Dempsey
Origin: Central America
Rocio octofasciata is native to slow-moving, weedy, and murky waters of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. Named after the legendary boxer for its aggressive temperament, it was one of the first cichlids to gain widespread popularity in the hobby. Adults display spectacular iridescent blue-green, purple, and gold scales set against a dark base colour. It is a substrate-spawner that forms pair bonds and provides extended parental care.
Water: 22–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness (GH 8–20). Tank: 300L minimum for a pair; provide caves, large rocks, and driftwood; use robust or artificial plants. Feeding: Carnivore; cichlid pellets, earthworms, large frozen foods; feed daily. Behaviour: Aggressive and territorial, particularly during spawning; intimidates smaller tank mates. Compatibility: Best with similarly sized robust cichlids; avoid delicate or small fish.
