Parachromis managuensis
Also known as: Jaguar Cichlid, Managuense Cichlid, Aztec Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Parachromis managuensis is native to Lake Managua and Lake Nicaragua in Nicaragua, with introduced populations now established across Central America. Young fish display a striking pattern of dark vertical bars that gradually transforms into the iconic jaguar-spotted pattern as they mature. This is an aggressive, large-growing species demanding large tanks and expert care. It is an active and intelligent fish that quickly recognises its keeper.
Water: 24–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard (GH 10–20). Tank: 750L+ for adults; minimal decor; heavy-duty filtration to handle large bioload. Feeding: Carnivore; large pellets, earthworms, whole fish, and large crustaceans; 2–3 feeds weekly. Behaviour: Extremely aggressive; territorial toward all other fish; best housed alone or as proven pairs. Compatibility: Species-only; avoid housing with smaller fish which will be predated.
