Hemigrammus hyanuary
Origin: Lago Hyanuary, Manaus, Brazil
Hemigrammus hyanuary, the January Tetra, originates from the Lago Hyanuary floodplain near Manaus in Brazil and is one of several members of the rummy-nose complex that are sometimes confused in the trade, though it is a biologically distinct species. Its red nose coloration is less extensive than Hemigrammus bleheri but still attractive, and it has an equally bold, well-defined tail stripe. It thrives in warm, soft, slightly acidic water and displays its best natural behaviour when kept in large schools of 8 or more.
House in groups of at least 8 in a well-planted aquarium (minimum 80 L). Maintain soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.0–6.8, GH 0–8) at 24–28°C. Feed quality micro-pellets, flake, and small frozen foods: Artemia nauplii and Daphnia. Compatible with other warm, soft-water species: cardinal tetras, corydoras, and dwarf cichlids. Regular water changes maintain water quality and colour intensity.
