Oryzias latipes
Also known as: Japanese Medaka, Ricefish, Medaka
Origin: Japan, China, Southeast Asia
Oryzias latipes has been kept as an ornamental fish in Japan since the 17th century and is the subject of extensive scientific research. Wild-type fish are pale olive, but captive-bred strains range from golden to white to blue. They are surface schoolers, easily fed, and among the hardiest small fish available — ideal for beginners and outdoor ponds.
Water: 16–28°C, pH 6.5–8.5, adaptable to a very wide range; suitable for outdoor tubs. Tank: 20L minimum, well-planted or mossy tank, tight lid recommended. Feeding: Omnivore — micro-pellets, flake, live/frozen daphnia and artemia nauplii. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling fish; little to no aggression. Compatibility: Ideal community fish with any peaceful small species; keep in groups of 6+.
