Oryzias latipes
Also known as: Japanese Medaka, Wild Type Medaka, Ricefish
Origin: Japan, Korea, coastal China
Oryzias latipes in its wild form inhabits rice paddies, irrigation ditches, and slow-flowing streams across Japan, Korea, and coastal China. It is one of the most studied vertebrates in science, used extensively in genetics, developmental biology, and space biology research. Despite its plain appearance compared to cultivated varieties, its behaviour and hardiness make it a rewarding species.
Water: 10–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.5, tolerates mild brackish; remarkably wide environmental tolerance. Tank: 20 L minimum; surface plants for spawning; outdoor tubs work excellently in warm months. Feeding: Omnivorous micro feeder; micro pellets, flake, Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and dried insects. Behaviour: Peaceful, active surface schooler; females carry egg clusters before depositing on fine-leaved plants. Compatibility: Ideal with other medaka, small rasboras, and nano invertebrates.
