Genicanthus semifasciatus
Origin: Japan, Northwestern Pacific
The Japanese Swallow Angelfish (Genicanthus semifasciatus) is a temperate-water species native to Japan and the northwestern Pacific, rarely seen in the aquarium trade. Males develop elaborate long filamentous caudal fin extensions that give the species its 'swallow' name. It requires cooler temperatures than most marine fish and is best kept by experienced aquarists with access to a chilled marine system.
Requires a large aquarium of 450 L or more with cooler temperatures (18–24°C) and strong water movement. This planktivore should be fed enriched mysis, cyclops, and high-quality frozen foods multiple times daily. Keep as a mated pair or single specimen. Peaceful and suitable for large reef systems.
