Scleropages jardini
Also known as: Jardini Arowana, Australian Arowana, Northern Saratoga
Origin: Australia
Scleropages jardini is native to the rivers of northern Queensland and southern Papua New Guinea, where it inhabits heavily vegetated, slow-moving tropical rivers. It is characterised by pink to orange-red crescent markings on each scale and a somewhat more robust body shape than its South American counterparts. It is generally regarded as the most aggressive arowana species, frequently attacking tankmates of all sizes without warning. Australasian arowanas are regulated domestically; ensure legal compliance in your country before purchase.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.5-7.5, moderately soft to hard; regular large water changes essential. Tank: Minimum 1500L; long tank with very secure lid; sparse decor to minimise injury risk. Feeding: Carnivore; large prawns, earthworms, insects, whole fish; avoid live feeder goldfish. Breeding: Paternal mouthbrooder; not practical in home aquaria. Compatibility: Keep alone; extreme aggression toward conspecifics and most other fish.
