Nemacheilus fasciatus
Also known as: Java Loach, Barred Loach, Banded Loach
Origin: Java and Borneo, Indonesia — clear hill streams and rivers
The Java Loach (Nemacheilus fasciatus) is native to hill streams and rivers of Java, Borneo, and possibly Sumatra in Indonesia. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or river loaches — a diverse group of typically slender, bottom-dwelling cypriniform fish adapted to fast-flowing, clear, oxygen-rich waters.
The body is elongated and cylindrical, tapering toward the caudal fin. A series of alternating dark brown to black and pale cream or yellowish vertical bands crosses the body from head to tail, giving rise to common names 'barred' and 'banded' loach. Three pairs of small barbels around the mouth assist in locating food items on the substrate. The underside is pale cream to white.
In their natural habitat, Java Loaches inhabit clear, fast-flowing hill streams with rocky and gravelly substrates, strong current, and high oxygen levels. They are bottom-dwellers that spend their time exploring crevices between rocks, foraging for small invertebrates, and resting in sheltered spots against strong flow.
In the aquarium, Java Loaches are hardy, peaceful, and active — an interesting alternative to the more commonly kept Kuhli Loach. They benefit from good oxygenation and moderate current, as well as smooth rocks and hiding spots that replicate their stream habitat.
Java Loaches require clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong current: pH 6.5–7.5, hardness 5–15 dGH, and temperatures 20–26°C. They are sensitive to poor water quality and low oxygen — good filtration with surface agitation is essential.
A minimum 80-liter aquarium with smooth rocks, pebbles, rounded stones, and fine sand or gravel substrate provides an ideal environment. Provide caves, rock crevices, and plant root structures for hiding. Good water movement via powerheads or spray bars replicates their native stream conditions.
Feed sinking foods placed in the evening when they are most active: sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen or live bloodworms, tubifex, daphnia, and small crustaceans. They are opportunistic omnivores that will also consume small invertebrates and organic detritus from the substrate.
Java Loaches are peaceful with most community species. Compatible with small to medium tetras, barbs, danios, corydoras, and other loach species that tolerate similar water conditions. They may be mildly competitive with each other and other loaches over hiding spots.
Keep in groups of 3–5 for natural social behavior. Single individuals may become shy and reclusive. Water changes of 25–30% weekly maintain the water quality this clean-water species requires.
