Also known as: Javanese Ricefish, Java Medaka, Javanese Medaka
Origin: Java, Indonesia
Oryzias javanicus is found throughout Java and surrounding Indonesian islands in rice paddies, ditches, and coastal lowland streams where it regularly encounters fluctuating salinity. It is similar in appearance to O. latipes but has a slightly more elongated body. Pairs deposit adhesive egg clusters that dangle from the female's body before she deposits them on plants.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.5, specific gravity 1.000–1.008; tolerates mild brackish. Tank: 30 L minimum; surface and floating plants for spawning and fry refuge; gentle flow. Feeding: Omnivorous; micro pellets, flake, dried blackworm, and frozen baby brine shrimp. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling medaka; females carry egg clusters before depositing on plant leaves. Compatibility: Ideal with other small medaka, nano rasboras, and dwarf invertebrates.
