Puntius jerdoni
Also known as: Jerdoni Barb, Jerdon's Barb
Origin: Southern India
Puntius jerdoni is a small, attractive barb from rivers and streams in southern peninsular India. It closely resembles several of its relatives but is distinguished by a well-defined dark caudal peduncle spot and, in breeding males, a warm flush of red through the dorsal and caudal fins. It inhabits a variety of water bodies from clear forest streams to slower-moving agricultural drains.
In the aquarium it is an undemanding and active schooling species that thrives when kept in groups of at least eight. It appreciates a planted tank with some open swimming space and does best with regular small water changes to keep nitrates low. Its relatively small size and peaceful temperament make it an excellent choice for South Asian biotope setups.
Breeding can be triggered by slightly lowering the water temperature and offering live or frozen food to condition broodstock. Eggs are deposited among fine-leaved plants and the adults are prolific scatter-spawners. Fry are easy to raise on commercial first foods.
Water: 22–27 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; regular water changes beneficial. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted aquarium with open midwater swimming space. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, micro-pellets, Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Breeding: Egg-scatter; condition with live food; remove adults; fry accept micro-powders. Compatibility: Peaceful with most community fish; keep 8+ for best behaviour.
