Hemichromis lifalili
Origin: Congo basin (Democratic Republic of Congo)
Hemichromis lifalili is the true Jewel Cichlid of Congo rainforest streams, displaying a breathtaking blood-red body studded with turquoise-blue iridescent spots that intensify dramatically during breeding condition to produce one of the most vivid colour displays of any freshwater fish. Pairs form strong monogamous bonds and are utterly devoted — and sometimes ferociously aggressive — parents that will defend their territory and offspring against all comers. Best kept as a dedicated pair in a species or large biotope tank with substantial shelter.
House as a bonded pair in a dedicated aquarium (minimum 120 L) with abundant caves, driftwood, and visual barriers. Maintain pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, soft to moderately hard water. Feed varied omnivore foods: quality cichlid pellets, frozen shrimp, bloodworm, and earthworms. Extreme territorial aggression during spawning is normal — be prepared to separate tankmates or the pair if escalation occurs. Regular water changes keep colour vivid.
