Salarias fasciatus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Jewelled Blenny (Salarias fasciatus) is a popular and highly effective algae-grazing reef fish with a mottled brown body adorned with scattered blue and white spots. It constantly grazes on microalgae, cyanobacteria, and film algae from rock surfaces, making it one of the most practical members of a reef clean-up crew. Hardy and adaptable, it is a staple recommendation for reef aquarists dealing with nuisance algae.
Provide a tank of at least 100 L with plenty of live rock for continuous grazing. Supplement with algae wafers, nori, and spirulina-based foods if natural algae is limited. May nip at clam mantles or coral polyps when hungry. Peaceful with most other reef inhabitants but territorial toward similar-shaped blennies.
