Carassius auratus
Origin: Captive bred (Japan)
The Jikin, also known as the Peacock Tail Goldfish, is a rare and highly distinctive Japanese goldfish breed with a unique X-shaped tail fin viewed from behind — a characteristic that distinguishes it from all other fancy goldfish varieties — and a strictly defined colour standard requiring red lips, fin edges, and gill covers on an otherwise pure white body. Considered a national cultural treasure in Japan, it is rarely available in European aquarium shops and commands significant collector value when genuine specimens appear.
House in a show aquarium or large tub (minimum 200 L) with clean, well-oxygenated water. Maintain temperature 10–22°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard water. Feed quality sinking fancy goldfish pellets and gel food; avoid floating foods to prevent swim bladder issues. Perform generous water changes (40% twice weekly) for optimal health. Keep only with other fancy goldfish that won't outcompete it for food.
