Julidochromis regani
Also known as: Regani Julie, Regan's Julie
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Julidochromis regani is one of the larger and more widespread Julie species, found along much of the Lake Tanganyika shoreline. Its brown-and-cream checkerboard patterning and elongated body make it instantly recognisable. Pairs form lasting bonds and breed in rocky caves, with both parents defending the territory aggressively.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water. Tank: 120L for a pair; extensive rockwork to create territories and spawning caves. Feeding: Quality cichlid flake, small pellet, and occasional frozen mysid or daphnia. Behaviour: Monogamous pairs; highly territorial during spawning; will attack intruding fish. Compatibility: Neolamprologus species, shell dwellers, Cyprichromis leptosoma in larger tanks.
