Julidochromis transcriptus 'Kissi'

The Kissi population of Julidochromis transcriptus is collected near Kissi on the DRC coastline and is characterised by heavier black patterning than other transcriptus populations — in many individuals the black covers the entire dorsal surface and upper flanks, leaving only the lower body white, which creates the impression of a mask or hood. This intense patterning makes Kissi specimens immediately recognisable among transcriptus variants.

In behaviour and husbandry Kissi transcriptus is identical to other forms: a monogamous cave-spawning pair that forms long-term bonds, defends a rocky territory, and produces successive small clutches throughout the year. The pair's brood-care dedication and the fry's relatively large size at free-swimming stage make this a reliable species for hobbyists new to cichlid breeding.

Keep Kissi transcriptus in a well-structured rocky aquascape and avoid housing with other Julidochromis populations to prevent hybridisation, which can occur readily between all Julie species. The Kissi form's dramatic pattern is best showcased against a light-coloured sandy substrate and bright, natural-spectrum lighting.

Water: pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–20, KH 8–16, temperature 24–27 °C. Tank: 80 L; extensive rockwork with caves; sand or fine gravel substrate. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, flake, frozen Artemia; twice daily. Breeding: Cave-spawner; biparental; reliable breeder; fry accept Artemia nauplii from day one. Compatibility: One pair per tank; do not mix with other Julidochromis populations; compatible with shell dwellers and Cyprichromis.
