About

The Julii Corydoras is a small, armored catfish native to the coastal river drainages of eastern Brazil. It is distinguished from the very similar False Julii (Corydoras trilineatus) by its spotted rather than connected-line pattern along the flanks. Reaching about 5.5 cm, it is perfectly sized for mid-sized community tanks. The body is pale silver adorned with a dense scattering of dark brown to black spots, and a bold dark stripe runs through the eye, adding to its expressive appearance.

In the wild, Julii Corydoras inhabit slow-moving, shallow, clear-water streams and rivers with sandy or fine-gravel substrates and abundant leaf litter. They are highly social, forming large aggregations that forage together across the riverbed. This schooling behavior must be replicated in captivity: a group of at least six individuals is essential for their wellbeing and to observe their natural, animated behavior.

The species is a true omnivore, accepting a wide range of sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworms, daphnia, and blanched vegetables. Despite their bottom-dwelling lifestyle, they are surprisingly active during the day, especially when kept in adequate numbers. Their barbels are sensitive to sharp substrate, so fine sand is strongly preferred over coarse gravel to prevent injury. Water quality must be pristine, as all Corydoras are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes.

Care Guide

Tank Setup Provide a minimum 60-liter aquarium with fine sand substrate to protect their sensitive barbels. Decorate with smooth river stones, driftwood, and low-growing plants like Java Fern or Anubias. Leaf litter (Indian almond leaves) mimics their natural environment and provides shelter. Ensure good filtration but keep flow moderate.

Water Parameters Maintain pH between 6.0 and 7.5, temperature between 20–26°C, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular partial water changes of 25–30% weekly are essential. They are sensitive to deteriorating water quality, so a well-cycled tank is mandatory before introduction.

Feeding Feed sinking pellets and wafers as the staple diet. Supplement with frozen or live bloodworms, tubifex, daphnia, and brine shrimp several times per week. Blanched zucchini or spinach can be offered occasionally. Feed after lights out if tankmates are competitive, as Corydoras are primarily crepuscular.

Tankmates Excellent community fish. Ideal companions include small tetras, rasboras, livebearers, and other peaceful species. Avoid aggressive or large predatory fish that may nip at their barbels or swallow them whole. Compatible with other Corydoras species.

Schooling Requirement Always keep in groups of at least 6. Solitary or small-group specimens become stressed, hide constantly, and are prone to disease. Larger groups of 10 or more produce the most natural and entertaining behavior.

Health Notes Watch for red or eroded barbels, which indicate poor substrate or water quality. Ich and bacterial infections are risks if water conditions decline. Quarantine all new fish before introduction.

Breeding Julii Corydoras are egg scatterers. Condition with live foods and perform cool water changes to trigger spawning. Eggs are deposited on glass, plants, and substrate. Remove adults after spawning or eggs will be eaten. Eggs hatch in 3–5 days; fry initially require infusoria or commercial fry foods, transitioning to micro-sized foods within a week. Observe group behavior daily during the first weeks after introduction to confirm all fish are feeding and no individual is being isolated or harassed by tankmates.
