Probarbus jullieni
Also known as: Jullien's Golden Carp, Isok Barb
Origin: Mekong River Basin
Probarbus jullieni is one of the largest and most imperilled cyprinids in Southeast Asia, native to the Mekong basin where it is critically endangered due to overfishing and habitat loss. Its impressive silver body bears rows of elongated dark spots, and mature specimens can exceed a metre in length. All commercially available individuals should be captive-bred; keeping and breeding this species is considered an important contribution to its conservation.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderately soft to hard (GH 5–20). Tank: 1000 L absolute minimum for juveniles; ponds preferred for long-term care. Feeding: Omnivore — large sinking pellets, fresh and frozen invertebrates, plant matter. Behaviour: Schooling as juveniles; may become more solitary with age. Compatibility: Peaceful but grows massive; only suitable companions are other large, robust fish.
