Crenicichla jupiaensis
Also known as: Jupiaensis Pike Cichlid, Paranapanema Pike Cichlid
Origin: Rio Paranapanema and lower Rio Paraná, São Paulo, Brazil
Crenicichla jupiaensis is a slender, elegantly proportioned pike cichlid named after the Jupiá Dam area on the Rio Paraná, from the lower Paranapanema River drainage of São Paulo state. It is one of several pike cichlids native to the Paraná system's more temperate tributaries, adapted to the moderately cool, oxygenated waters of the subtropical Brazilian plateau.
In colouration, C. jupiaensis presents a subtle but attractive combination of a faint lateral stripe, fine dark dorsal speckling, and a well-defined caudal spot. The overall body colour is silver-olive with a slightly golden hue in well-conditioned individuals. Males develop more pronounced dorsal and caudal fin colouration during the breeding season.
At 22 cm, C. jupiaensis is a manageable size for an experienced cichlid keeper's 220 L species tank. Water conditions should replicate the moderately hard, near-neutral Paraná system — conditions achievable with standard European tap water. A solid, lower-maintenance Crenicichla option for aquarists in hard-water areas.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5 at 20–27°C; moderate hardness (up to 15 dGH); no special water treatment needed in most areas. Tank: 220 L with sand, driftwood, and smooth rocks forming clear cave territories. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods and quality cichlid pellets; adapts to prepared foods well. Breeding: Cave spawner; moderate seasonal temperature variation can assist conditioning. Compatibility: Pairs well with large robust South American cichlids in a Paraná biotope setup.
