Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Juvenile Assorted Discus, Mixed Juvenile Discus, Assorted Discus
Origin: Captive bred (assorted domestic strains)
Juvenile Assorted Discus are mixed domestic-strain fish sold at 5–6 cm body length. At this size, base colours and patterns are beginning to develop but have not yet fully expressed, making each grow-out tank a voyage of discovery as fish reveal their strain heritage over the following months.
Juvenile discus have more demanding feeding requirements than adults — they must be fed small, high-protein meals three to five times daily to support their rapid growth phase. Water quality is even more critical at this life stage; juveniles are more susceptible to stunting from high nitrates or inconsistent temperatures than adult fish.
This product is ideal for hobbyists who want to raise a group from young, select their favourite colour variants as they develop, and establish a bonded group with a natural social hierarchy from an early age.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; zero tolerance for ammonia or nitrite at juvenile stage. Tank: Minimum 200 L grow-out tank, bare bottom or fine sand, gentle sponge filtration, no sharp decor. Feeding: Feed 4-5 times daily — beefheart paste, baby brine shrimp, finely chopped bloodworm, juvenile discus pellets. Breeding: Not applicable at juvenile stage; establish group hierarchy and identify pairs as fish reach 10 cm. Compatibility: Juvenile discus only until 8-10 cm; then introduce carefully selected peaceful companions.
