Kalolo Mudskipper

Periophthalmus kalolo is one of the larger and more commonly encountered mudskipper species across the Indo-Pacific, distributed from East Africa and the Red Sea through South and Southeast Asia to Australia and the Pacific islands. It inhabits the intertidal zone of mangrove forests, tidal mudflats, and estuaries, spending most of its active time on exposed mud surfaces. The body is olive-brown with pale blue iridescent spots and a distinctively high, flag-like first dorsal fin adorned with a dark margin and pale base. Males are aggressively territorial on the mud surface, performing elaborate push-up and fin-display rituals to deter rivals and impress females. This is a hardy and personable species in the aquarium, more tolerant of water parameter variation than some congeners, but still requiring a paludarium setup with a substantial land area, warm temperature, high humidity, and brackish water.

Water: 24–30 °C, pH 7.5–8.5, GH 10–25, KH 5–15; brackish (SG 1.005–1.015) required; keep water shallow and humid. Tank: 150 L minimum paludarium; large damp sand and mud land area; mangrove root or cork bark for climbing. Feeding: Carnivore; live crickets, earthworms, frozen bloodworm, freeze-dried krill; prefers feeding on land. Breeding: Burrow spawner; male fans eggs in underground air pocket; breeding rarely achieved in captivity. Compatibility: Territorial; best in species tank; if mixing, provide ample space and visual barriers.
