Flowerhorn hybrid (Cichlasomatinae)
Also known as: Kamfa, Kamfa Flowerhorn
Origin: Captive bred (hybrid)
The Kamfa is one of the foundational Flowerhorn strains, developed by crossing Flowerhorn lines with Vieja and Cichlasoma species to produce a fish with characteristic sunken white eyes, a fan-shaped broad tail, and extensively pearled scaling. The kok of a quality Kamfa is large, rounded, and water-filled, giving it a smooth spherical appearance distinct from the firmer humps of other strains.
The Kamfa's dense pearl scaling catches light from every angle, creating a dazzling display that has made it a perennial favourite among Flowerhorn enthusiasts. Body colouration ranges from orange-red to deep crimson, with black lateral patterns of varying intensity depending on the bloodline.
Kamfa Flowerhorns require exactly the same care as other Flowerhorn strains: high protein diet, pristine water, and spacious solitary housing. Quality specimens with full pearl coverage and well-developed koks command premium prices in the Flowerhorn market.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–20; regular large water changes are non-negotiable for maintaining pearl lustre and colour. Tank: Minimum 400L; bare bottom preferred for hygiene; strong canister or sump filtration to handle heavy bioload. Feeding: High-protein Flowerhorn pellets with astaxanthin; supplement with frozen krill and earthworms to maximise kok development. Breeding: Pairs form slowly; use a divider initially to prevent aggression; females are smaller with more rounded fins. Compatibility: Strictly solitary; cannot be safely housed with any other fish without risk of severe injury or death.
