Synodontis katangae
Also known as: Katanga Synodontis, Katanga Squeaker
Origin: Congo (Katanga region)
Synodontis katangae hails from the Katanga region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, one of the richest areas of African biodiversity. It displays an attractive pattern of dark reticulations on a pale tan to creamy background, giving it a mosaic-like appearance that becomes more defined in well-conditioned adults.
In the aquarium it proves a hardy, adaptable fish tolerating moderately soft to hard water across a reasonable pH range. It is moderately active and tends to be more visible than many nocturnal Synodontis species, particularly in tanks that provide adequate structural complexity.
This species pairs well with medium to large West and Central African cichlids and characins, occupying the bottom zone where it performs a useful scavenging function.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–15, KH 2–10). Tank: 250 L minimum; smooth rocks, driftwood caves, open sandy patches; moderate flow. Feeding: Quality sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm, prawn; varied diet maintains best colouration. Breeding: Cave spawner; not routinely bred in home aquariums. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium to large community fish; may be territorial with conspecifics over caves.
