Cyprinus rubrofuscus (domesticated koi)
Origin: Captive bred
Ki Utsuri is a rare variety of the Utsurimono group, displaying a deep jet-black base (sumi) with bright yellow hi markings distributed in the classic Utsuri lacquer pattern. One of the oldest recorded koi varieties in Japan, Ki Utsuri predates many of the modern varieties yet remains one of the rarest and most sought-after by serious collectors. It is rarely available in standard pond shops and typically only appears through specialist koi dealers.
House in a well-filtered pond of at least 2,000 L with good water quality and UV sterilization. Maintain pH 7.0–8.5, temperature 5–25°C; fully cold-hardy through Northern European winters. Feed quality koi pellets with colour-enhancing supplements to maintain the depth and saturation of the yellow hi. Regular water changes and UV filtration keep the sumi deep and the yellow vivid. Compatible with all other koi.
